Yonne Peters

Yonne Peters is a PhD candidate at the department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology of the Radboud university medical center in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. She started her project in January 2017, directly after obtaining her Master’s degree in Medicine.

In her PhD project she focuses on the early detection and prevention of esophageal adenocarcinoma and its precursor Barrett’s esophagus. By timely detection of esophageal cancer both cancer incidence and mortality could possibly decrease. Deciding which screening test to use, however, is challenging. There are several potential options for esophageal cancer detection (e.g. blood test, breath testing, cytosponge, unsedated transnasal endoscopy, and upper endoscopy).

To optimize esophageal cancer screening and achieving high attendance rates it is of importance to gain insight in factors that influence population’s preferences for different esophageal cancer screening strategies.

In this context Yonne will perform a CBC study to assess patients’ preferences regarding the different screening methods. This study will help to predict the uptake with various screening test, and to inform clinicians and policy makers to further design screening programs.
