Amy Phan

Amy Phan is an M.D. candidate at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry in Rochester, NY, USA.   She is a magna cum laude graduate of Brown University, where she received her bachelor’s degree in Biology.  Prior to matriculating to medical school, she worked for two years within the Orthopaedic Surgery Department at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts.  She is currently conducting research with the Orthopaedic Surgery Department at the University of Rochester.

The main objective of Amy’s research project is to help elicit patient preferences for nonoperative and operative treatments for distal radius fractures.  Distal radius fractures account for approximately 18% of fractures in Americans 65 years and older.  In addition, randomized controlled trials have shown comparable outcomes at 1-year follow-up for patients treated both nonoperatively and operatively.  Given the similar outcomes at 1-year follow-up, her study will use adaptive conjoint analysis to determine the factors that influence patients to choose operative or nonoperative management after distal radius fractures.
