Maximum Difference Scaling (MaxDiff)

MaxDiff is an approach for obtaining preference/importance scores for multiple items (brand preferences, brand images, product features, advertising claims, etc.). Although MaxDiff shares much in common with conjoint analysis, it is easier to use and applicable to a wider variety of research situations. MaxDiff is also known as “best-worst scaling.”

We offer two different software tools for MaxDiff:

  • MaxDiff/Web for computer-based interviewing
  • MaxDiff Experiment Designer for designing paper-based questionnaires

Our MaxDiff software is a component within our SSI Web suite of tools. It includes all the functionality for designing, fielding, and analyzing your MaxDiff data.

The MaxDiff Experiment Designer includes only the tools for designing MaxDiff experiments. Users may purchase additional software for analyzing the results, such as the CBC/HB system for estimating scores for each respondent, or the Latent Class software for conducting segmentation and estimating scores for market segments.

Read more about the MaxDiff methodology or download the MaxDiff Technical Paper.

MaxDiff/Web System:

  • Two system sizes to choose from: up to 30 items / up to 500 items
  • Two methods of analysis: counting analysis; score estimation based on hierarchical Bayes (HB)
  • Web-based or CAPI interviewing (computers not connected to the Internet)
  • Includes comprehensive manual, with tutorial and examples

MaxDiff Experiment Designer:

System Requirements

SSI Web is designed to run on Microsoft Windows 2000/Windows XP/Windows 2003 operating systems. However, you may notice minor visual differences across platforms. A minimum video resolution of 800 x 600 is required.

The MaxDiff Experiment Designer is designed to run on Microsoft Windows 2000/Windows XP/Windows 2003 operating systems.

Server Requirements

For web-based data collection, the software works on any Windows or Unix(Linux) based server platform that supports Perl scripts (including inexpensive shared hosting solutions).
