Version 8.3 Enhancements

We have added many new features to version 8.3. The bulk of the improvements are in the ACBC module, but there are also a few features that improve the capabilities of CBC and MaxDiff.

Alternative-Specific Designs

Interaction Search Tool

Alternative-Specific Designs   Interaction Search Tool

Until this software version, ACBC users have been limited to traditional experimental designs, where the attribute list is a common list applicable to all product alternatives. In v8.3, users can specify that certain attributes (with all their levels) are only applicable to certain levels (e.g. brands, styles, etc.) of a primary attribute. This will open up new possibilities for the application of ACBC. For example, if comparing desktops to laptop computers, the laptop has a battery whereas desktops do not. There may be a conditional attribute upon the presence of battery, such as three levels of battery life. With alternative-specific designs, the attribute Battery Life (with its three levels) would only occur with laptop computers.

For both CBC and ACBC, a new aggregate logit utility estimation procedure is available to help researchers investigate which interaction effects are potentially most significant. This routine automatically estimates utilities for main effects only, then runs main effects plus each possible two-way interaction effect (examined one at a time). It summarizes the results by listing the interaction terms in order from most to least significant in terms of the p-value as computed from a 2-log likelihood test. This automated routine should take away excuses for not investigating potential interaction effects. The most significant interaction effects found by this automated tool under aggregate logit are probably good candidates for inclusion in the final HB modeling.

Missing Levels in Conditional Display

ACBC Test Design

Missing Levels in Conditional Display   Test Design Routine

If you have an alternative-specific or partial profile design in CBC or an alternative-specific design in ACBC then it is now possible for you to specify in a conditional display table what is displayed when a missing level occurs. The 0 level in the table represents the not applicable level. Previously, we defaulted to the text shown for level 1 of the not applicable attribute.

The new ACBC test design feature generates "robotic" respondents and provides key statistics regarding the quality of the designs: level frequency, balance, d-efficiency, and standard errors (precision) of the utility parameters. It reports how often each level was shown to each respondent, so it is easier to adjust the questionnaire settings to target the "show each level at least twice and preferably three times per respondent" rule.

Version 8.2 Enhancements

Version 8.2 includes a number of enhancements and new features, including the following:

Data Generator

Streamlined Hosting Setup

Data Generator   Streamlined Hosting Setup

The new Data Generator allows you to generate test records automatically, which is helpful for testing skip patterns and setting up crosstabulation reports prior to collecting real data. Data can be generated under local testing on your computer or remote testing on a web server. There are many advanced capabilities within the Data Generator, including the ability to script specific responses to given questions and for other questions to answer randomly.

If you used our Sawtooth Software hosting service previously, you had to cut-and-paste various server settings from our hosting portal dialog into SSI Web for each new study. With v8.2, you no longer need to do this. The Web Server Management menu automatically synchs with our hosting platform. All you need to do is select the desired hosting project as the target for uploading the study.

MaxDiff Anchored Scaling

MaxDiff Logit/Latent Class Integration

Anchored Scaling   Logit / Latent Class

Standard MaxDiff scores are relative measures of utility. Anchored scaling allows the researcher to establish a threshold anchor utility (often set to zero) that has more concrete meaning. All item scores are then estimated with respect to that anchor. The anchor can refer to the threshold between important vs. not important or a buy vs. no buy. Version 8.2 provides capabilities to automatically insert dual-response indirect scaling questions.

SSI Web v8.2 integrates aggregate (pooled) logit estimation and latent class segmentation estimation within the MaxDiff Analysis menus. Aggregate logit can be useful when the MaxDiff data are too sparse and not appropriate for HB estimation. Latent Class finds segments or groups using MaxDiff data, where respondents are quite similar within classes on the item scores and quite different between classes. You no longer need to buy a Latent Class license to get this functionality.

CBC Best/Worst

Mobile Improvements

CBC Best/Worst   Mobile Improvements

CBC exercises can now take advantage of a different method of collecting choice data: Best/Worst. Rather than indicating just the best concept, respondents also tell us which concept is worst. This additional response provides additional data from which to estimate models.

While SSI Web has been able to function on mobile devices for some time, we have tweaked some of the settings and added some features that make our surveys even more functional on mobile devices. More Info

CBC Analysis Integration

Enhanced Editor

CBC Analysis Integration   Enhanced Editor

CBC users will appreciate the addition of new features in the Analysis tab of SSI Web. Now, rather than needing to export files to calculate utilities, utility estimation may be done entirely within SSI Web, including Counts, Logit, Latent Class, and Hierarchical-Bayes. This should save you time and boost your productivity.

SSI Web's enhanced text editor turns customized scripting into a near pleasurable experience. It senses whether you're typing in HTML, CSS, SSI Script, or Perl code and changes the color of the script to match. Then it suggests syntax, automatically closes tags, numbers lines, indents blocks of text, improves the undo and redo functions, enhances the search and replace function, folds code, splits screens, and much more. Looping

Semantic Differential Questions

Looping   Semantic Differential

The new Looping function allows you to repeatedly ask a set of questions for each item in a list, while only requiring you to create the questions once. This feature helps simplify questionnaire authoring when the same series of questions must be asked for each brand, family member, shopping trip, menu item, etc. on a list. It provides advanced features for organizing looped data in more efficient ways when exporting data.

The new Semantic Differential question type uses paired list items to elicit responses on a scale. One common use of this type of question is in psychological profiling (Which of these describes you best? Happy - - - - - Sad). This question type also supports slider bars. Questions may be structured as slider questions without requiring that they be semantic differential scales.

Cross-Tabs

Database

Crosstabs   Database

Cross-tabs in Admin Module. We have added the ability to do cross-tab reports in the Admin Module. Run multiple reports at the same time, save reports for later use, produce bar and pie charts of your data, and even download .csv files with cross-tab results. The original marginals reports are still available, but have been upgraded along with the new cross-tab function.

Database. Databases are now used to store data both on the web server and locally on your PC. Web server supports both MySQL and Microsoft SQL databases. We believe this shift will provide greater data integrity and fewer data problems, and will also provide the ability to link online data with other programs that require real-time database access

JQuery

Side-by-Side Installation

jQuery   Side-by-Side Install

jQuery. We are now using jQuery instead of MooTools as our JavaScript library. This will provide more power and flexibility in writing JavaScript and creating dynamic elements in your survey.

Side-by-Side Installation.Use the latest version of SSI Web without having to uninstall your old versions.

But that's not all. Based on user feedback, we also added the following features and enhancements to SSI Web, making it the most powerful software engine we've ever produced:

  • Export Improvements
    • List Recode: List values can be recoded when exporting data based on lists. Currently, lists are automatically numbered sequentially from 1 to n and the numbering cannot be changed by the user. When exporting the data, these values can now be modified to reflect a different numbering system.
    • Batch Export: Set up all your exports once and then export all necessary files with just a few mouse clicks. It supports multiple export profiles.
    • Filtering: Previous software only filters based on completion status when exporting/analyzing data. This new feature allows advanced filtering based on any respondent data.
    • Open End: The Open End data export now provides the option to export answers grouped either by respondent or by question. Previous versions only exported answers grouped by question.
  • Auto Upload Improvement. In addition to uploading survey files, the auto upload feature now can remove completed studies and clean up survey files no longer needed on the server.
  • Ranking Question Update. This question type now supports the ability to specify a minimum and maximum number of items to rank. Previous versions allowed users to specify a maximum but not a minimum.
  • Survey Authoring Improvements
    • Copy and paste questions, lists, skip logic, etc. between multiple instances of SSI Web open at the same time. Previous versions allowed you to copy and paste, but only within one instance of SSI Web. This feature allows users to essentially set up question libraries and makes it easier to work between two or more studies at the same time.
    • Import/Export Quota Cells and Skip Logic
  • CBC Improvements
    • Advanced Design Module now supports up to 250 attributes (previous limit was 30)
    • Conditional relationships (price/display) can now include all of your attributes (previous limit was 4 attributes per relationship) (Note that this also applies to CVA.)
    • Time per task is now included in CHO file export
  • MaxDiff Export Option. Some users have expressed the need to export the position numbers of the items selected as best and worst in MaxDiff exercises, particularly for identifying straightliners and other patterns of responses.
  • SSI Script Updates
    • ToolTip text popup function: This new SSI Script feature allows you to display a popup tool tip for specified text. When the respondent moves their mouse over the top of this text a box will be displayed with “HelpText” in it.
    • GetValue / SetValue function: These script commands allow you to create a variable, and then change its value at different points in a survey.
  • Windows Clipbard Support. Copy Lists from SSI Web to the Windows clipboard
  • Internal Labels in Lists. This feature has been in conjoint products for many years, but was not available in lists. Now, users can specify two types of item labels: text to display to respondents (HTML), and alternate text (internal labels) that is displayed when exporting list items, displaying lists while working within SSI Web, etc.
Additional Features

In addition to the features listed above, SSI Web easily allows you to create online surveys with the following question types:
