Laurens Vermylen is a fourth-year resident in general surgery, training through KU Leuven, with a strong interest in vascular surgery. His research focuses on clinical decision-making in vascular surgery, particularly the factors that influence the choice between supervised exercise therapy (SET) and surgical intervention for patients with claudication intermittens.
As part of his surgical training, Laurens is conducting a conjoint analysis (CBC) study to explore how vascular surgeons weigh different factors when selecting the best treatment approach for claudication intermittens. His study investigates the role of patient preferences, symptom severity, motivation for lifestyle changes, and vascular feasibility in clinical decision-making.
By collaborating with vascular surgery departments in Belgium and the Netherlands, this research aims to provide new insights into treatment preferences and to contribute to evidence-based, patient-centered vascular care. The findings may help refine guidelines and improve long-term outcomes for patients with peripheral arterial disease.
