Lorenz Baum

Lorenz Baum is a doctoral candidate and research assistant at the Chair of Information Systems and Information Management with Prof. Dr. Oliver Hinz at Goethe University Frankfurt, Germany. Previously, he completed his Bachelor's and Master's degree in Business Information Systems at the Technical University of Darmstadt, Germany. His research interests in the field of Information Systems include privacy-friendly business models, human behavior in online communities, and the management of artificial intelligence - with a particular focus on human-centric design of AI systems as well as on the potentials of business models that derive value from data using AI.

Lorenz aims to investigate consumer preferences for Personal Rights Management Systems (PRM-Systems). Within the platform economy such systems might help both consumers and companies: Companies meet the legal requirements of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and consumers get insights into how their personal data is used, can manage consents, and might assert ones' rights, such as the right to erasure or right to data portability within chapter 3 (Art. 12 - 23) of the GDPR (see https://gdpr-info.eu/chapter-3/). With these systems currently being developed and becoming available to the consumers this research project aims to find out what the preferences PRM-systems are and how they are changing over time as users gain experience with them. This is interesting as there might be a discrepancy between what the GDPR requires the companies to do and what consumers want. Based on recent research, incentivizing the consumers' permission to allow personal data trading for companies is of special interest. Backed by a pre-study currently being developed on this topic, Lorenz plans on conducting three CBC-studies within the next years to find consumer preferences on PRM-systems and see their change over time. Besides the individual analysis of the studies, he plans on doing a joint analysis using a covariant-extended HB.
