Philipp von Weinrich holds a Master's degree in International Management/CEMS from the Rotterdam School of Management and a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Mannheim. As part of his Master thesis, Philipp investigated the relative importance of the consultation mode (video versus in-person) in a patient’s appointment choice. He further examined what patient characteristics affect the preference for video compared to in-person consultations.

Philipp conducted a discrete choice experiment (DCE) with a sample of 350 adults, representative of the German adult population in gender and age. The level of continuity of care and the waiting time until the next available appointment were shown to be of higher relative importance than consultation mode. Moreover, the relative importance of appointment attributes differed between video and in-person consultations.

Although participants preferred in-person over video consultations per se, the predicted probability of choosing a video over a typical in-person consultation could be increased significantly to 40% by improving video consultation attributes. Individuals with less data privacy concerns, higher technology proficiency, and more fear of Covid-19 were shown to derive a higher utility from video compared to in-person consultations.
