Qimin Liu

Qimin Liu is a graduate student in the clinical psychology PhD program at Palo Alto University. Qimin's research interests include depression, anxiety, help-seeking behaviors, cultural influences on symptom presentations, and Chinese American mental health. Qimin's clinical work involves using a cognitive-behavioral approach with clients who experience emotional and social challenges.

Qimin's dissertation examines the differences and similarities in mental-health-related help-seeking behaviors between Chinese Americans and non-Hispanic White Americans. There is a huge gap between Chinese Americans' mental health needs and the services that the current mental health system can offer. Many Chinese Americans do not get the mental health services that they need. Most evidenced-based psychological treatments are developed with a predominately White sample. It is imperative to explore and design mental health services that meet Chinese Americans' needs. Qimin is working closely with her mentor to develop a dissertation that explores how and what Chinese Americans value when they decide to seek mental health services. The result of this research contributes to developing culturally adapted mental health treatments that will benefit the underserved Chinese American community.
