Smart follow-up question

Introduction

Smart Follow Up

The smart follow-up question uses AI to analyze a respondent's open-end response and generate a follow-up that prompts richer insight. It's especially useful when the original answer is short, vague, or low-effort.

Example:

Q1: How was your most recent shopping experience at our store?

Response: It was good. The employees were helpful.

Follow-up: What specific aspects of your experience contributed to it being good, and how did the employees assist you?

This feature is available to all paid subscribers with AI features enabled.

How it works

When a respondent submits an open-end answer, the AI evaluates its quality relative to the original question and assigns a score of 1 to 5.

  • 1: The answer was not understood. The follow-up repeats the original question.
  • 2–4: The follow-up seeks to add value, such as asking for clarification or specific examples.
  • 5: The AI summarizes the feedback and asks the respondent to confirm.

All follow-up questions are guided to be neutral and non-leading, match the language and tone of the original question, and focus on one topic in one or two sentences.

Additional instructions

Add extra guidance to refine how the AI behaves alongside its built-in prompt. For example:

  • Always follow up on price if mentioned, or bring it up if not.
  • Keep the tone conversational or formal.
  • Skip the follow-up when the answer scores a 1 or 5.

Note that output may still vary. The same input won't always produce the same follow-up question.

Settings

All standard open-end settings apply, including single vs. multi-line layout and character counter. See the Open-end question article for details.
